Kay Minter
Twenty years ago, my dear friend and poet Paul Matthews remarked to me, "You understand beauty, Kay." This statement has resonated ever since, shaping my daily pursuit as an artist, photographer and flower grower.
I believe a flower is akin to a timeless piece of music, one that you wish would never end, even as it gracefully fades encapsulated in the power that beauty holds.
Each photograph begins with flowers that I have grown myself—nurtured from seed and soil to the quiet space of my studio. This process creates an intimate connection with every bloom I photograph, allowing each image to become both a careful study and a poetic portrait: meticulous in detail, whilst rich with feeling.
Before turning my focus fully to my garden and studio practice, I spent my formative years working as a costume designer in the film and music industries.
During that time I had the privilege of collaborating with visionary directors such as Jonathan Glazer, as well as working with artists including Massive Attack. I designed and made the costumes for the now-iconic Metz Judderman commercial and Boddington commercials. That world of visual storytelling—where mood, texture, and atmosphere shape a narrative—continues to influence how I compose and photograph my work today.
I now work between my flower field and studio in Hove, where many of the flowers I photograph are grown and gathered by hand. I also collaborate with rare and dedicated growers whose work shares my reverence for botanical heritage.
My work has been collected internationally and exhibited across the UK. At its heart, it is an invitation to pause—to look closely and rediscover the quiet grace of the natural world. Through each photograph, I hope to capture a moment of stillness and the power of beauty, one bloom at a time. Flowers are the costumes of our earth.
